Design does not happen in a vacuum. Clear verbal skills are all important in communicating your ideas to clients and design team members. For all critiques, students are expected to come prepared to present their concepts, discuss how the form of their design supports their concept, and describe how they arrived at their ideas. Providing comment to your peers is a privilege. You will benefit from both giving and receiving feedback—you do not have to "like" another's work, but you must provide insightful commentary in a courteous and productive manner.

iPad/building an app
The magazine project has many "pros" making it a great project to include in your final portfolio. 1) It tells a story about collaboration 2) proof of concept (you developed a concept and used it as a guide for ever design and content decision 3) shows someone you can work within a system.

To exploit the magazine even more we are going to do a couple of things.
1. Refine/Redo Style Guide. Find your style guide, refine it and turn it into a real style guide/ brand book. People L O V E seeing that you can make and follow guidelines. Relook at it (I know many of you did it the night or morning of so make it better!. How can it tell the story of the brand of the magazine? How can it show process/development/sketches. How can you make the guidelines clearer? SPELL CHECK!!!!!

2. On-screen experience. Making it move. Thinking about it as a interactive medium.
Using your initial magazine layouts turn it into an iPad format. If the cover is not yours make a cover. Animate it in AfterEffects or Photoshop. Include the cover, table of contents, and at least one feature OR department. You can do many things on an ipad that you can't do in a printed magazine. Take advantage of showing show content can be hidden, displayed, interactive... This is not a working ipad app this is just animated mock-up.

PROCESS
Step 1: look at what you have. Step 2: how can you make your magazine more interactive? is there music, video, links, things that expand. Step 3: what are your icons? and visual cues. keep it simple but how does the style of your mag inform these icons and cues? Step 4: translate your content to work on in the iPad format. Step 5: Redo the cover and animate it -- for your portfolio the only time it will be seen animated will be online.

*be very careful not to be redundant of your printed magazine. how can you exploit the advantages of on-screen? if it looks exactly the same as your printed portfolio you will get curious looks from people when you are showing your portfolio.

*file size is important for online projects... work within the online parameters of visible size (it will be around 400 x 600px) and file size work in 72 dpi. it is a nice touch to have something move since most things you have online are static. If you use cargo you can use the slide show feature and that is nice for your app click through. If you are using behance you may want to consider making a simple self playing click through of your apps (this belongs in a museum...)

*pad size and grid. download template off the server. You can decide to work in portrait or landscape.

* I will always have my ipad with me, you are welcome to borrow it and look at magazines on it. (please do).
