*Coldsnow Creative in KC carries or will order Pina Zingaro. The advantage of ordering from them is that you save shipping cost and if we order as a group you save a bit more money. So if you want a Pina Zingaro or any other portfolio Coldsnow carries. Don't order it until we are ready as a group.

EXAMPLES
Publication Design or Evoke Magazine or both...

Evoke Magazine
With fellow designers Alex Anderson, Keene Niemack, Sally Carmichael, and myself as art director we conceptualized and designed an ecological magazine that is not the stereotypical gardening publication, but instead focuses on sustainability in the creative world. Evoke Magazine showcases innovative art and design that has been influenced by our natural environment and, through this, encourages a shift in human behavior. The content focuses on the progressive ways people are interacting and incorporating nature into their creative world. Broken into the departments of Landscape, Gallery Art, Product Design, and Architecture, in addition to features on accomplished artists and designers in their respected field, this magazine inspires and informs readers on a professional and creative level.

MAGAZINE
Cypher:
a sophisticated hip hop fashion / lifestyle magazine that aims to quell the often-inaccurate
stereotype that hip hop revolves around gold teeth and drugs. A group project spanning over 80 pages, my contribution as Art Director includes cover design, one 2-page department spread, one 8-page Feature article and one 6-page fashion shoot.

Porter is a mobile application that helps travelers document, navigate, and share their experiences with friends and family while they are abroad. Integration of location, journaling, data-free maps, reviews, and helpful hints allows users to document their daily travel experiences without the stress of documenting everything by hand.

You Can be an Expert Rifleman is a beginner's guide to the sport of riflery, complete with images, diagrams, and step-by-step instructions on how to improve your marksmanship and accuracy. Text taken from the book by Frank Briggs and re-designed to better connect with its target audience.

Meridian is beauty with deviance. Offbeat, obscure and intriguing, it appeals to women who embrace their oddities and affirm to express them. Meridian aims to dissect the clichéd notions of beauty in order to discover the lovely peculiarities that lie within each of us.

Lemons, Book Redesign. The lemon has to be the most versatile fruit known to man--in addition to being cheap, eco-friendly and multi-talented, it is of course deliciously flavored and aromatic. This essential guide to the power of lemons shows you how to clean, polish, deodorize, deter pests, garden, protect pets, take care of your skin and improve hair, improve your health. By using hand lettering and fun illustrations, it makes this book an invaluable guide for the home.

Portfolio/Promo book Round 2
___ Using the format you decided on lay it out the 2 projects 3 different ways
___ Will it be conceptual or a picture book? what is the visual narrative? verbal narrative?

___ What will people learn about you in your interview?
___ Will you show process? How?
___ How will you identify the project? Name or Type of project or both?
___ How will it be bound? Bindings effect the design.
___ Want to use a photo of your project but don't have one THEN FIND AN EXAMPLE online. Use what you find online to plan out how you want to show a project. Is it in context, on an all white background, dark? Are you showing the entire thing for context or a detail.

Lecture Resume

A resume is a type exercise. It is the thing that shows someone that you understand typography -- and if they should talk to you more. It IS NOT a place for too much personality. You personality comes through other points of contact. Read: What goes on a Resume

Self Branding Due Nov 3
___ resume
___ sheet with projects on it (3 - 5) for senior show
___ business card
___ cover letters (3)
___ thank you
___ leave behind/send ahead
___ pdf of your self-brand process

HOMEWORK
You should already have this done
-- my personality is... is not... (take an on-line personality test if you need to)
-- i enjoy working on projects that are..., i don't enjoy projects that are...
-- i like to work in this manner... the design process part that you like... and don't like
-- i see my work as it relates to the field of graphic design
= your philosophy, your strengths, why are you a designer

what reflects you?
Thinking about color, patterns, how to express yourself as a brand. Do not just stick your name on stuff. How do all the pieces start to tell your brand story. All the pieces together tell your story. Give a glimpse into your personality.

DO THIS FIRST (all of this goes into 1 pdf. Put the pdf on the server before class starts)
___ 20 typographic solutions using your name + title (any font combinations)
___ explore at least 3 different color palettes (3+ colors)
___ textures, patterns that identify you as a designer and supports your concept.

Research Business systems (what make them stand out)
ideas that work | not good |
business system
| b-card examples | more b-card examples | ephemera | hang tags

NOW Organize and define your concept and build out your brand story (toolbox)
3 - 5 full directions/concepts

EACH DIRECTION CONTAINS some samples on behance
_ concept / design objective
_ logo/logotype/name lock-up
_ tag-line(s) (not required but if it strengthens the concept)
_ type specs what typefaces and why
_ color palette
_ patterns or textures (not required but if you want them now is the time to develop them)
_ business card (4 different design options) (what goes on a b-card)
_ resume (1 design option different design for each concept!) (what goes on a resume)
_ thank you card
_ last page of your portfolio
*we will take your best idea and refine it over and over so NOW is the time to explore WHAT it can look like. Do not skip this step

paper: start looking for paper (no watermarks), nice paper that has different weights, or you can double up for a business card. avoid heavy stocks for resume and NO thin paper for a business card. The BEST place to go in Kansas City is Paper Station, they are GREAT. They have samples and will order and cut any paper they have by the next day. GO and get some samples and start figuring that out. or mr french or Neenah
