| Golden Apple Award. Nominated by students, The Dallas Society of Visual Communication’s version of the “Teacher of the Year” award, the Golden Apple is presented annually to the educator whose understanding of the visual communications professions, superior curriculum, and exemplary mentoring are evident in the collective quality of the work submitted by his or her students that year at the National Student Show and Conference.

the following students have been awarded or recognized for the work done as a project in one of my major classes or special topics classes.

2011 | Kansas City Ad Club Scholarships. Regional portfolio competition and scholarship. The students underwent a rigorous interview and application process before being judged the “best of the best”. Lauren Schimming was selected.

2011 | Dallas Society of Visual Communication. Annual National Student Show and Conference. Juried by nationally recognized design professionals. Jing Jian was awarded a scholarship for best sophomore portfolio.

2011 | Brass Ring 24, Oklahoma Christian University Art and Design. National competition over 80 Universities entered. Morgan Stevens and Jovan Nedeljkovic were awarded.

2011 | American Institute of Graphic Arts Scholarship. Two students from each of the area schools were nominated by their professors to compete for the 5th annual AIGA Kansas City Chapter Scholarship. Michael Selby submitted his portfolio and was awarded the $1,000 scholarship.

2011 | Hallmark Cards Summer Internship
: Jing Jian, Lauren Schimming and Gavin Angel were selected from over 800 applicants for summer internship program. Projects selected from all Visual Communication classes. I worked with over 25 KU students on their applications.

2010 | Kansas City Ad Club Scholarships. Regional portfolio competition and scholarship. The students underwent a rigorous interview and application process before being judged the "best of the best". Laura Cook, Brian Rio and Alexandra Avila were awarded.

2010 | Dallas Society of Visual Communication.
Annual National Student Show and Conference. Juried by nationally recognized design professionals. Lauren Schimming was awarded a scholarship for best sophomore portfolio. Micheal Selby was awarded a scholarship for junior portfolio. Other awards included... (add)

2010 | American Institute of Graphic Arts Design Competition, Kansas City. Sixth annual AIGA KC, Design Awards. Juried by nationally recognized design professionals. Brian Rio won juror's choice for his Hallmark Symposium Poster he did in my special problems class. Jordan Jacobson and Morgan Stephens were awarded for projects done in Typography 2.

2010 | Brass Ring 24, Oklahoma Christian University Art and Design. National competition over 60 Universities entered. Matt Chase and Matthew Cook awarded Brass Ring Awards.

2009 | Hallmark Cards Summer Internship. Matt Chase and Kayla Heckman were selected from over 1000 applicants for summer internship program. Projects selected from all Visual Communication classes.

2008 | American Institute of Graphic Arts Design Competition, Kansas City. Fifth annual AIGA KC, Design Awards. Juried by nationally recognized design professionals. Jay Vaglio and Matt Chase awarded for their bookcovers designed in Typography 02. Jarred Kolar awarded for motion graphic work completed in Graphic Design 02.

2008 | Graphex 39 design, AIGA Tulsa. Juried by nationally recognized design professionals. Lauren Ruiz awarded a cash award for her bookcovers designed in Typography 02 class.

2008 | Kansas City Ad Club Scholarships. Regional portfolio competition and scholarship. The students underwent a rigorous interview and application process before being awarded scholarships. Amy Rottinghaus and Caroline Curtin were each awarded $750 scholarships.

2008 | Hallmark Cards Summer Internship. Matt Chase, Kayla Heckman and Laura Rottinghaus were selected from over 450 applicants for the summer internship program.

2007 | American Institute of Graphic Arts Design Competition, Kansas City. Fourth annual AIGA KC, Design Awards. Juried by nationally recognized design professionals.

2007 | Creative Quarterly Journal of Arts and Design. Sophomore, Amy Rottinghaus received "Best of Show" in Graphic Design for her bookcovers designed in my Typography 02 class. The Creative Quarterly’s competitions are judged by leading graphic design professionals. Work submitted to the magazine is open to all public, private, two and four year programs in graphic design, illustration, photography or fine arts.

2007 | Dallas Society of Visual Communication. The Third Annual National Student Show and Conference. Juried by nationally recognized design professionals. Chi Hiu Yim recognized for a magazine spread designed in my Typography 02 class.

2006 | American Institute of Graphic Arts Scholarship. Two students from each of the area schools were nominated by their professors to compete for the first annual AIGA Kansas City Chapter Scholarship. Juile Vinh submitted her work and was awarded the $1,000 scholarship.

2006 | American Institute of Graphic Arts Design Competition, Kansas City. Third annual AIGA KC, Design Awards. Juried by nationally recognized design professionals. Students awarded for work done in my classes: Julie Vinh, Chi-Hiu Yim, Orion Kinkaid, Kelly Sands and Cole Winblad.

2006 | Omni Awards, Kansas City Art Directors Annual Regional Design Competition. In a Special Topics class, ten students designed five posters for the Coterie Theatre, Kansas City, Missouri. Four posters gained professional recognition in the form of Gold, Silver and Bronze Omnis.

2005 | American Institute of Graphic Arts Design Competition, Kansas City. Second Annual American Institute of Graphic Design, Kansas City, Design Awards – the a2 Awards. Juried by nationally recognized design professionals. Julie Vihn was awarded for stamps designed in my Typography 02 class.

2005 | Omni Awards, Kansas City Art Directors Annual Regional Design Competition. In a Special Topics class, ten students designed five posters for the Coterie Theatre, Kansas City, Missouri. The four posters gained professional recognition in the form of Gold, Silver and Bronze Omnis.

2005 | Magazine: Creative Convocation, An Assembly of College and University Arts. National magazine showcasing student projects done throughout the United States. The Central Region featured four projects by Garrett Owen.

2005 | Kansas City Ad Club Scholarships. Regional portfolio competition and scholarship. The students underwent a rigorous interview and application process before being awarded scholarships. Joel Shaw was awarded a $750 scholarship.

2004 | AIGA Design Competition. First Annual Juried AIGA KC Design Competition. Judges are nationally known in their field. Garrett Owen was awarded for three projects and Jane Huschka was awarded for her bookcovers designed in Typography 02.

2004 | Omni Awards, Kansas City Art Directors Annual Regional Design Competition. In a Special Topics class, ten students designed five posters for the Coterie Theatre, Kansas City, Missouri. The three posters gained professional recognition in the form of Gold, and Silver Omnis.

2004 | KU Undergraduate Research Award. UGRA awarded to John Wilson, Visual Communication for the study of semiotics: “Signs: Semiotics in Visual Communication”

2004 | Step One Competition. The design competition was open to undergraduate students in the Kansas City region. Industry professionals served as judges. Jake Steele, Joel Shaw and Garrett Owen were all recognized and awarded for projects done in my Typography 02 class.

2003 | Omni Awards, Kansas City Art Directors Annual Regional Design Competition of the Kansas City Art Directors. Ten students enrolled in a Special Topics class, designed four posters for the Coterie Theatre, Kansas City, Missouri. The four posters gained professional recognition in the form of Bronze Omnis.

2003 | KU Undergraduate Research Award. "EUROLOGUE: International Perspectives on America and War", a one woman show and video presentation by Laura Marshall and Mo Perry, supported by a J. Michael Young Opportunity Award and an UGRA. I was faculty advisor to Laura Marshall met with her weekly to discuss her topic, how it would be presented, how the video would incorporate written text with the taped interviews and I critiqued the printed materials.
