Project 4: Conference
Your next challenge is to imagine, design and produce the materials for a 2-day conference on a topic based on any Ted.com/topics. To give your conference line-up some seriousness you will use TED.com to identify 8 speakers in your speaker line-up.

What is the big idea behind the conference?
Why would people want to attend?
Who would be the speakers?
Who would attend it?
When and where would it be held.

Look and Feel: The final solutions must be an organic/kinetic series. The audience shouldn’t be able resist your promotional piece, want to find out more AND want to go to your conference and keep the materials.

*Only restriction is it can’t be a Design conference. You can have a designer(s) speak but it can’t be the focus. What is a topic outside of Design that is interesting?

......................................................................................................................................................................
Wed, Oct 31
— Project Due
— Introduction to Project 4: Conference
— Select 3 topics before you leave class --
— Set up an InDesign doc for your process book. (multiple master pages, grid, running head, character styles)

HOMEWORK (start designing it as a process book)
PHASE ONE
:

— What are TED.com/topics sound interesting. Consider at least 3 different topic before you pick 1.
__ What did you consider and what did you select. Why?
__ Watch at least 8-10 videos on the topic and pick your 8 speakers.
__ Also look at 1 - 3 written articles.
Write down ____key points ____phases ____words they use ____things they refer to.
— What is a common theme(s)/thread(s)? (you have to define at least 1)
— What 3 - 6 question(s) can be answered?
— What 6 questions that can be asked?
— From that what could be the arching/ big ideas about the conference?
** you may have to watch a couple of times. you need this list complete for your concept!
— Who are your 8 speakers?
__ Is there someone that is not a TED speaker that you would like to include? Can have 2.
— Use TED.com to identify at least your 8 speakers.
** Make sure your speaker line-up is diverse in topic, perspective…

Capture all of the above and start thinking about how want to put it together as a printed process book (not printing it but design it if you were...) Use as many pages as you need. Use a grid. Pick your typography. Use style sheets.

Upload to the class google drive: Name the file your name and put it into the +Conference_HandIn -> Phase_One Folder.

PLEASE... DO NOT GO TO LOOKING EXAMPLES ON WHAT YOU THINK IT SHOULD LOOK LIKE.
You will get sidetracked on making something cool and not having a concept. Don’t look. Just think. :look at the TED.com/topics. Watch TED talks. Read. Research. Brainstorm. What would be a cool conference in regards to CONTENT. IDEAS. You will make this project look cool but do not start there! It is dangerous to your future to image what you want it to look like first. Think first. Take your time to do the list above and you will have a great start.

Monday, Nov 5
— Present Phase 1 (pdf)
— Audience Profile, Concept Development in class and homework
Process Book examples (their process is slightly different so don't use it as a guide)

HOMEWORK PHASE TWO (add to process book save as pdf)
Define Threads/Key words/Phrases

What where the treads/thoughts/phrases/keywords you found that could tie the 8 speakers together?
What were the questions you could ask?

Define WHERE
Where will it be held (what city)? What venue in that city. Find a convention center, hotel, museum or art center to hold it in. Where you hold it may influence the look and feel.

Define an Audience Profiles (write in class 30 min.)

Very detailed narrative of a specific person that would attend. Name the person, age, where they live, what they do not only job but hobbies, etc, what they watch, what the read... where they shop... Detailed person that would be interested in your conference.

Develop Concept Ideas (six different ones)
Develop a concept. Brainstorm words that can capture, expand, twist your thread. Maybe a metaphor? Look at some Action Verbs. Start with these ideas… expansion, expanding, unfold, unravel, extend, distend, broaden, develop, multiply, disjoin, combine, reveal ... or any other words.. What 2 words could you put together to make a concept?

Create 2-5 six word pitches about the conference. (remember back to the Blitz)

Develop 6 different Conference Names. Taglines. Paragraphs.
— What is the concept? The Big Idea? Six Word pitch?
— Name of the Conference
— Tagline
— Write 3 -5 sentences about your conference. They should support and expand your concept.

............................................
Audience Profile (example)
Mia is a 27-year old grad student at Stanford University who heard about this conference in her marine research class. After learning that it was in Brisbane Australia just a short drive from the Great Barrier Reef, she decided that she simply must go and experience this conference dedicated to coral reef conservation - which just so happened to be the subject of her thesis project. She and a group of 7 classmates purchased tickets to the conference and planned a two week trip to travel Australia and visit all the best dive sites, museums, and restaurants.

Mia is originally from Santa Barbara, California, where she grew up surfing and swimming and developing a passion for the ocean, which led her to pursue a career in marine biology. After school she decided to get her masters in order to do more research about conservation. Her other hobbies include hiking,
baking, and traveling. Her favorite book is Harry Potter and her favorite tv show is Grey’s Anatomy. She is very close with her family, especially her siblings who always go on scuba diving excursions during their family vacations.

What is the concept? The Big Idea? (examples)

Passion Blue
Tagline: Patterns to Preserve the deep

Open conversation to how humans can change behavior patters to preserve. There are a lot of little things in human behavior that we can easily change to help preserve the oceans so people can continue to express their passions for the ocean.

endless tides
Tagline: guard the blue

The ocean is only 1-5% discovered. The ocean is endlessly abundant to itself and to humans. Transportation, food source, and scientific interest. With only so little of oceans having been explored, its being greatly effected already. We need to know whats wrong to protect the rest of the ocean.

Vast + Furious
Tagline: nurture the nature

The ocean is the vastest force of nature in our world. Being the largest and deepest basin in the world, it has a very powerful force for the world. With the oceans strength, it can negatively affect main
land due to our human activity.

reefRESH
Tagline: Reviving our Coral Reefs

The idea behind the reefRESH conference is a renewed sense of purpose and excitement for returning our coral reefs to the healthy and beautiful state that they once were. Reefs provide a blooming ecosystem for oceanlife and as well as providing a source of tourism, income, and food for those of us on land. As corals have begun to die, so has a vast amount of valuable resources, not to mention the value of beauty, history, and science that they also bring. Treasures like coral reefs need to be protected and conserved, and the reefRESH conference is all about educating and enacting this new wave of change.
_Words: renewal, positivity, dynamic

Going, Going, Gone
Tagline: Where is the coral?

Going, Going, Gone, is centered around the heavy idea that it’s up to us to make a difference and make sure coral reefs don’t continue in their slippery decline. It’s a deep topic that deserves our attention, but also thoughtful and inspiring discussion and information. Another side to this conference may be anappreciative and historical account of coral reefs and how they impact our world. While they are still in abundance, how do we inform others of their beauty and value and therefore convince them to enact change before it’s too late. And if it were to get to that point, what might happen then?
_Words: righteous, productive, inspiring

Human
Tagline: Catch a Glimpse of Yourself
Humanity is a conference that encourages discussion and open-mindedness about self-identity. As society changes, it’s important to discuss the characteristics that make us who we are, and how we can better understand others who are different than ourselves.

More titles and taglines...
Connect - Cultivating strong relationships
Join - Our Magnetic Pull to others
Fuse - Electrify your relationships or Let the sparks fly
Merge - The road to relationships

Wednesday, Nov 7
— Select Name, Tagline..
— Refine concepts in class
— Define 3 key words that help with visuals
— Work on phase 3 finish as homework.

HOMEWORK PHASE THREE
Title/Tageline: If you have a Conference Title/Tagline/Paragraph GREAT!
If not create 3 more options. And do the type studies.

Logotype studies
Create 20 - 30 logotype + tagline studies think how the type supports the name and tagline.

Create 3 different Toolkits: (example: this one is close to what is asked of you)
You are exploring the visual language of the system for the conference. You can use things you have made or examples you find (you will make your own visuals). You are looking for reference, inspiration, look and feel… You can create your own imagery (photo, illustration, vector) or find images you can manipulate. Start making a folder of images you could use.

On your toolkit boards make sure you include the Name, Tagline, Concept Statement and Audience Profile (on the toolkit or on its own 11 x 17 so we can read them as we look at your toolkits. Everything should relate back to your title, tageline and statement.
__ typography, font, styles, how it will be used.. 1 | 2 |
__ color palette: define a palette and how you will use it/ overlay. pure. bold. soft
__ images: what images would you use/objects, place... no headshots of speakers for this part
__ images manipulation… full color, bw, bitmapped, juxtaposed/collage...

(optional) patterns / icons

__ patterns/textures: if you are using them what do they look like?
__ icons if you were going to use them what is the style?

Print out the everything on 11 x 17 sheets of paper (and put a pdf on the google drive)
You need to explore 3 completely different toolkits for the same concept.
1 concept with 3 different ways to show the concept visually.

Monday, Nov 12
— Select Name, Tagline...
— Crit type studies + Toolkits
— Explain Kinetic System — examples
Use this illustrator file for our Kinetic System explorations

HOMEWORK: EXPLORING THE KINETIC SYSTEM
REFINE logo type / lock-up how are using typography for the title and tagline of your conference.

Explore 5 different design directions. You are now using your any of your toolkits to explore how these things actually look like. These are rough sketches of what the design can look like in 3 different formats. USE THIS ILLUSTRATOR FILE. Your are exploring. Freely exploring your toolkit. Use photography, illustration, vector illustrations, typography, pattern etc... whatever you need to build out visual system. Do not get stiff and conservative. The only wrong answer is to not explore.

For the 5 different design directions. Remember the range you had in the last project where you designed very close to a style, to just the likeness (distant relative) to something in between. Looking for range in the 6 different solutions.

Each of the 5 design directions is shown in 3 different proportions. (another wording of the same thing: 6 different design directions each with 3 different formats. A kinetic system is not a cookie cutter solution. It means you are not just scaling things to fit into the next format. How can you change the proportions of the items to make a system? The 3 formats within the 1 solution are not range per se they are change in form/format/hierarchy, they are pushing the directions, cutting it up, changing it up, changing the proportion. They are not a new idea. Make sure you are really clear on this!

Make sure yo understand kinetic system before you start. If you come in with the same thing over and over on class on Monday you will not get any feedback and you will be behind.

ALSO!!! Collect all this information you will need it for Wed homework: Speaker's name, @twittername, title of the talk, 1 - 3 sentences about the talk. Also plan a schedule when they would talk time and day. Talks are normally an hour. And breaks... example

..........................................
example (of all the info for each speaker)

3:00 – 4:00pm
Gary Slutkin
@GSlutkin
Let's treat violence like a contagious disease
Dr. Gary Slutkin spent a decade fighting tuberculosis, cholera and AIDS epidemics in Africa. When he returned to the US, he thought he'd escape brutal epidemic deaths. But he began to look more carefully at gun violence -- whose spread follows the same pattern as an infectious disease.

Wednesday, Nov 14
— Select System, refine/expand your toolbox and build out to a poster, city and speaker screen.
3 different directions of the same concept: exploring look and feel. Work fast. Big Picture.

HOMEWORK: DESIGN EXPLORATION
POSTER FRONT
(would be mailed out, hangs around the city (bus shelters...)
20 x 30 inches, full color... (print to fit onto 11 x 17)
Title, tagline
When (dates -- two days), Where (meaning city)
Short blurb: about the conference

POSTER BACK (use a grid! should relate to the front)
20 x 30 inches, full color... (print to fit onto 11 x 17)
Title, tagline (smaller than than the front)
When (smaller than than the front)
List all speakers and all this info for each.: Name, @twittername, Title of the Talk, Time of the talk, day of the talk, 1 - 3 sentences about the talk.

CITY BANNERS
2 banners side by side 5 x 2.25 (each) use the pair to create the info don't repeat the info on each. You can put them all onto 1 11x 17)
Title, tagline
When

SPEAKER BUMPER
Create a key frame (if the motion stopped what would we see?) Use a 16x9 ratio. This will animate but for now just design what one screen will look like. You can put them all onto 1 11 x 17.
Speaker's Name
Title of the talk

Explore what these can look like, How they work as a kinetic system. Don't just shrink and stretch designs. 3 different design solutions for the 3 different deliverables. Design them full size but you can combine each direction on a 11 x 17 sheet. 1 direction per 11 x 17.
