Project Two: LETTERFORM STUDY
Project two focuses on learning to identify and work with letterforms and typefaces. It is expected of graphic design professionals that they recognize an almost infinite number of typefaces; it is essential, therefore, that students begin by learning to classify typefaces into these major historical, categories (type classifications):
Old Style, Transitional, Modern, Slab Serif, Sans Serif

You will be using one font from each type classifications: Adobe Garamond (Old Style), ITC New Baskerville (Transitional), Bauer Bodoni (Modern), Belizio (Slab Serif), Helvetica Neue (Sans Serif)

Your task is to create a series of compositions using the fonts listed above. Each composition is comprised of one one capital, one lowercase and one numeral (3 characters). The compositions must illustrate one of the following five compositional modes: opposition, tension, overlap, details/ cropping, and scale.

Technical restrictions
-- Do not keep using the same three letters and numeral in your compositions
-- Explore many combinations
-- Do not mix typefaces
-- Use letterforms as solids (do not outline the forms)

To succeed in this project you must show a variety. You must use a different character set in every final solution. Do not have the same letter or number in any of the final 5 solutions)
-- Use of the square, character choice, form to form relationships.
-- Variety in the characters you choose
-- Variety in size, weight, use of drop outs, background.
-- Use of the square: where you put the composition in the square.
-- Form to Form relationships

It is your responsibility to have everything asked of you ready before class begins. Process is 50% of your grade you can't pass the project or the course if you don't come prepared for every class. If you have prints in the print lab when class begins you will be counted LATE (3 lates = 1 absence).

Introduction to Project 2
Hand in Homework
Lecture (classification, letterforms)

Working in class
With tracing paper and marker, begin to experiment with compositional arrangement of letterforms within a square format. We will be working in class on this, what you don't finish in class is your homework. All due Wednesday. Also Wednesday there will be a parts of the letter and font classification quiz.

For each typeface you need to have a minimum of two thumbnails that works with each of the following five compositional modes: opposition, tension/interaction, overlap, details/cropping, and scale. That will give you a minimum total of 50 thumbnail. Organize your sketches clearly insofar as to what typeface and compositional mode is being used. Select 15, make a copy so they are at least 3 inches large for the class crit.

While sketching, notice the similarities and differences between the five typefaces. Although compositionally the characters will combine into a new form, the essential characteristics of the original typefaces should be maintained. Look also to how you create form and counterform—every successful composition will inevitably involve active negative space or counterform.

Technical restrictions
-- Do not keep using the same three letters and numeral
-- Explore many combinations
-- Do not mix typefaces
-- Use letterforms as solids (do not outline the forms)
-- Overlaps may drop out to white

Lecture (Illustrator introduction)
Work in class

Homework
On the computer: for each typeface create a minimum of 2 sketches in each of the five compositional modes. Compositions are 36 x 36 picas. Under each composition write the typeface and the compositional mode. Each composition use 1 cap, 1 lowercase, 1 number. Do not mix typefaces in the composition however, you may use different styles in a composition (bold, italic, reg). Minimum of 50 sketches. Print them out b/w with the boarder showing. Select 15 of the 50 to present in the class crit. (15 should show each font and each compositional mode). You may use black background and white type.

plus Cropping Exercise: Using the Computer OR by hand crop 15 different letters or numbers. Crop them as far in as you can and still have them read as the letter. You must be able to distinguish the letter. (be sure you try this in class before you leave). If done on the computer print them out.

Homework: Create 15 refined or new compositions Each typeface will need to have a minimum of 3 sketches in any of the five compositional modes (each needs to be shown once). Do not mix typefaces in the composition however, you may use different styles in a composition (bold, italic, reg).

Refine OR Explore you are searching/refining/creating those final 5.

Create a minimum of 15 sketches. Minimum of 3 composition from each type classification and you must have at least three example of each of the compositional modes. Print them out b/w with the boarder showing.

Then select final 5 and save them as 1 pdf. PLEAS ADD to your pdf a table of contents...

example:
page 2: Adobe Garamond: Tension
page 3: ITC New Baskerville: Overlap
page 4: Bauer Bodoni: Opposition
page 5: Serifa: Cropping
page 6: Helvetica: Scale

Minimum of 1 composition from each type classification and you must have at least one example of each of the compositional modes. Composition must be clear, and all 5 need variety.

MOUNTED DUE after fall break, we will discuss when after Fall Break.
Mount each composition on black core board with a 2 inch boarder all around. Include the name of the typeface and compositional mode along with your name on the back. In addtion: process book containing all process, title page, project brief, project overview and pdf.

Monday Oct 20
no class, advising.

Due Oct 23. Monday we do not have class however you do have homework. Define you type term/part of the letter.

project 3: parts of the letter
1) type up the definition for your "part of the letter or typographic term" using words.

2) illustrate the definition visually (no words)

3) concept 3 - 5 different ways you can teach someone your part of the letter or term. (compare, contrast, metaphor, simile, onomatopoeia). you can illustrate it using scale, photos, illustrations, words, symbols, icons...)

Type all of the above and bring a copy for me and a copy for you to keep for your process book. We will discuss concepts, I will show you examples of what was done last year and we will go over how you will storyboard it. (frames/storyboards are not due wed).

project 2: many of you handed in the pdf incorrectly so please bring your letterform compositions to class so you can redue your pdf.

Wed you will also have a
Midterm Quiz: parts of the letter, type classifications and definitions from project 1 (point, pica, leading, rags, justification, absolute measurement, relative measurement, em, hyphen, x-height...
